Understanding Paper Numbers and Variants

PaperLoop groups documents by syllabus, session, paper and variant because those identifiers determine which resources belong together. Understanding them helps you avoid marking the right work with the wrong scheme and makes your practice more relevant.

Syllabus code comes first

The syllabus code identifies the subject and qualification specification. Subjects with similar names can have different codes, so use the code shown on your syllabus or entry information rather than relying on the title alone.

Component or paper number

A qualification can contain several components assessing different skills or content. The first digit in a two-digit paper code commonly identifies the component: for example, Paper 2 may have codes such as 21, 22 or 23. The exact meaning is defined by the syllabus.

What the variant identifies

The second digit commonly distinguishes variants used for administrative or regional timetabling. Variants are designed to assess the same syllabus at a comparable standard, but their questions and answers are not interchangeable.

If you attempt paper 22, use the mark scheme for paper 22. A scheme for paper 21 may look similar while containing different values and marking points.

Read a filename carefully

A filename such as 0620_s24_qp_22 can be read as syllabus 0620, May/June 2024, question paper, component/variant 22. Related files may replace “qp” with labels for a mark scheme, grade threshold or examiner report.

Choose relevant practice

Start with the components required by your course and entry option. Other variants of the same component can provide valuable additional practice. A different component, however, may assess different content or use a different format.

Avoid common matching errors

Do not match documents by year alone. Check all identifiers before starting and again before marking. If a document appears inconsistent with your question paper, stop and verify the code rather than adjusting answers to fit.
